Analytical balances are among the most sensitive and most expensive instruments in the laboratory. Incorrect use can lead both to measurement errors and, in the short term, to failure of the instrument.
Correct Placement
The balance should be placed on a vibration-isolated bench, away from direct sunlight and from air currents (air conditioning, windows, doors). If the floor is not level, check the level with the adjustable feet and the spirit-level indicator of the instrument.
Warm-Up Time
After the balance is switched on, wait at least 30–60 minutes for the internal components to reach thermal equilibrium — especially with 0.1 mg instruments, readings drift if this step is skipped.
Daily Check
A quick verification with a certified reference weight before each use is recommended. If a deviation is detected, a full calibration (usually with the instrument's internal weight or an external weight set) should be carried out.
Cleaning
The weighing chamber should be cleaned with a soft brush after each use, and any spilled chemicals should be wiped up immediately with a cloth that is not damp. Glass doors should be cleaned with non-alcohol-based cleaners that do not damage the glass surface.
Common Mistakes
Placing the sample with forceps or a spatula rather than by hand, taking readings only with the draft shield closed, and not opening and closing the door of the balance room frequently are the simplest ways to protect accuracy.
